3JULYAUGUST2013Asafollow-uptolastmonthsConsiderYourselfCuttingEdgeJayneSkeffcontinuestofindgoodnews.IsMainstreamAmericaFinallyWakingUpToTheRichnessOfTheAmericanWestWhatthemediahastosayByJayneSkeffWelltheanswerwouldseeminshorttobeyes.Afterjust200shortyearsinthemakingitappearsthatthelegacyoftheWesthasfinallycometotheforefrontinartandmediainthemosturbaneofsettingsincludingNewYorkanddownwardalongtheEasternseaboard.HighNoongotitsfirsthintofthistrendafewyearsagowhenluxurylifestylemagazineTheRobbReportflewawriterouttoLosAngelestocreateafeaturestoryaroundtherichnessofcollectingWesternsaddleswithadditionalfollow-upstoriesoncollectingWesternAmericanaontheireditorialcalendar.TheNewYorkTimeshasfeaturednumerousarticlesonthisgenreofcollectingandmostrecentlytheWallStreetJournaljustcompletedafeatureontheWildWestatAuction.AndaweekdoesntgobywhenthereisntaninquiryfromaTVproductioncompanylookingforanangletocreateaseriesonthewildworldofWesternAmerica.ItsfurtherinterestingthatmostoftheseTVproducershavebeenfromLondonorNewYorkandmostrecentlyParis.Wellitlookslikesomeoneinfactiswatchingandrealizingwhatthoseofusinthisworldhavealwaysknown.Whenitcomestomediaattentionweallknowmoneydrivestheirinterestbuttheresmoretothisthanjustthat.Inwhatcouldbeconsideredalandmarkmoveforthefirsttimesincetheirdoorsopenedin1870TheMetropolitanMuseumofArtinNewYorkwillbefeaturinganexhibitofWesternbronzes.ScheduledtoopenDecember182013andtitledTheAmericanWestinBronze1850-1925thisexhibitwillfeaturetheworksofRemingtonRussellFraserandManshiptonameafewandtheirartisticrepresentationsoftheNativeAmericanIndiancowboyscavalryandpioneers.Togetsomevalidationonthistrendandsomeexplanationsastowhywedecidedtotalktothemediathemselves.InatimewhenmajormainstreamglossymagazinesareonthedownwardspiralpagecountsslashedinhalfordiscontinuedentirelytheWesternlifestyleandartmagazinesarethrivingbiggerthaneverwithsubscriberbasesreachingintoEurope.WesternArtCollectorbeganpublishinginSeptemberof2007.InaninterviewwithJoshuaRoseEditorofWesternArtCollectorhenotedthatsincetheirpremierissuethemagazinehasatleasttripledinsizeandtheirsubscriberbasehasgreatlyextendedtotheEastCoast.JoshuatookthetimetosharehisinsightsonwhatsdrivingthisstampedetoWesternartandartifacts.Continuedonpage4Forthefirsttimesinceopeningitsdoorsin1870theMetropolitanMuseumofArtinNewYorkwillfeatureaWesternartexhibit.NamedTheAmericanWestinBronzetheexhibitwillopenDecember18andrunthroughApril132014.
