Originally employed as a commercial artist for major magazines (Look, Time, Life, Newsweek) as well as Western publications, Phillips began painting western scenes full-time in 1959, often relying on his personal collection of cowboy and old west artifacts to provide the intricate “period” details his discerning eye demanded.
