James Robert Wills, born in rural Texas in 1905, was a full-time musician by 1929. An expert fiddler and showman, Wills led the premiere western swing band of the 30s and 40s. The group, eventually known as the Texas Playboys, was based principally in Tulsa, OK and later Southern CA. A complex, exciting hybrid, his style combined country fiddling with big band swing, producing a synthesis exemplified by “San Antonio Rose,” one of his many hits. Wills and his band remained popular for many years after World War II even though most big bands had faded. Despite failing health, he appeared personally for his induction into the Hall of Fame in 1968. An impressive array of contemporary musicians, attribute their inspiration to Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys!
