Joseph Thomas Ward

Attorney for the Dept of the Interior, Indian Affairs

Joseph Thomas Ward, an attorney for the Dept of the Interior, Indian Affairs 1910-20s, was actively involved in finalizing the last treaties with the Sioux Indian tribes. He spent many years traveling to their lands, and over those years through business and friendship the tribes bestowed many gifts upon him. Among the wide array of gifts received were beaded and quilled moccasins, leggings, man’s shirt, pipe and tobacco bags, armbands, vests, parfleche bag and a drum. Later in Ward’s life, he bestowed many of his precious pieces to his good friend, Linda Laspe’s father where they have remained for over 50 years.
