In 1857 Samuel Sherlock founded the oldest saddlery in the Northwest in Portland to furnish harness and riding equipment to settlers and army posts in remote sections of the area. The discovery of gold in neighboring Idaho and the expansion of gold camps further contributed to a booming business for the Portland Saddlery which continued to prosper when the expansion of ranching brought an ever-growing demand for saddles and cow-country equipment. In 1874, Sherlock’s brother-in-law George Lawrence joined him, and ultimately took over the company in 1893.
