L Ship Shee

Artist
1896-1974
BP: Kansas

L Ship Shee was a prolific painter of the 1950-70s, a Potawatomi from Kansas who died in 1974. This self-taught Native American artist was born on the prairie band Potawatomi Reservation near Mayetta, Kansas, in 1896. Having studied with Dick West, an important contemporary Cheyenne painter, Ship Shee painted many Indian busts, both Chiefs and women, and landscapes. His art is distinctively bold.
