Ace Powell

Artist
1912-1978
BP: Tularosa, NM
LKL: Montana

Born in Tularosa, New Mexico, Asa Lynn Powell, known as Ace, was a traditional Western painter. As a boy, Powell had watched and was inspired by Charles Russell, a family friend and neighbor. In 1938, after a few private art lessons Powell became a self-taught artist, following in Russell’s footprints to sketch and paint what he knew best: the life and the land of northwestern Montana and the region around Glacier Park. He focused on the cowboys, their house and his beloved Blackfoot Indians. Powell remained in Montana until his death.
