Otto Plaug

Born in Dessau, Germany, Otto Plaug immigrated to the United States with his family in the early 20th century. Primary among his early influences were prominent figures in western art, Edward Borein and W. Herbert Dunton. Both of these artists were personal friends of the Plaug family as the Plaug estate contained a number of personalized paintings by both Borein and Dunton. Also contained in the Plaug estate were illustrated invitations to social events from Borein indicating the personal relationship Plaug and his family had with these two icons of the western art movement. Indians, cowboys and western scenes comprise much of Plaugs early works reflecting his respect, and the influence of, Borein and Dunton.
Throughout his career, Plaug demonstrated mastery in a wide range of media, including oils, pencil and ink drawings, crayons, pastels, watercolors, printmaking, and woodblocks. Plaug was an instructor at Skidmore College in New York. During Plaug's life in New York, he witnessed virtually every major American art movement of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Plaug revealed his artistic talents through many of these various styles during his long career as a painter and teacher.
Plaug died in New York at the age of 102. He had in excess of 600 paintings in his estate upon his passing.
