William Matthews was born in New York in 1949 and moved with his family to San Francisco in the late fifties. He received art training on the West Coast but credits the watercolorists of San Francisco and his mother as his earliest influences.

His work has been widely exhibited nationally, included in numerous exclusive private collections, and his pieces are part of the permanent collections of the Autry National Center, Los Angeles; the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and Museum, Cody, Wyoming; the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, Oklahoma City, and; the Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis.
