W H D Koerner

Artist
1878-1938

In the history of American art, our native school of illustration during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries was one of the most popular chapters. Woven inseparably into this fabric was the lure of the American West and the life and work of W H D Koerner. As with many aspiring artists of his time, Koerner decided on a career as an illustrator. His success followed a course of formal training, apprenticeship, and good fortune. He is best known for his long and fruitful association with the Saturday Evening Post. He received his first assignment in 1909 and worked with them for most of his remaining life. Devoted primarily to Western scenes, Koerner's illustration and covers set a standard for historic perspective and artistic excellence, and American readers owe their vision of the Old West to that great artist.
