Tom learned spur making from his father in Colmam, Texas. Worked for McChesney then for PM Kelly in Dalhart, Texas around 1911. Subsequently opened his own shop in Dalhart, which he operated until his death in 1915. According to Kelly, "Tom Johnson was one of the best and fastest hand-workmen ever."
