John Wade Hampton

Artist
1918-2000
BP: Brooklyn, NY
LKL: Sonoita, AZ

John Wade Hampton, a founder and early president of the Cowboys Artists of America, was raised in Brooklyn New York where he developed a love for the west from watching early Tom Mix movies. He began illustrating while still in high school. Eventually settling in Arizona, John gained international recognition as both a painter and sculptor of cowboy life learning first hand from living much of his life in the Southwest. John once said “I like to paint the romance of the west, not somebody getting a saddle sore or a hernia.”

It was in 1977 when Hampton tried his hand at bronze work and won the gold medal at the Cowboys Artists of America show. John spent the last years of his life in Sonoita, AZ.
