James M. Forbes

Saddlery-Saddle Maker
1840-1900
LKL: Santa Barbara, CA

Ohio native James Forbes appeared in the Santa Barbara business directory for the first time in 1883 as the owner of a harness and saddle shop. His shop located at 737 State Street, remained in operation until approximately 1897, when his ad last appeared in the directory. He died in Santa Barbara in October of 1900. During his relatively brief stay in Santa Barbara, Forbes had one of the larger saddle shops in the city, employing some of the better-known local saddle makers, including Francisco Moreno and Herbert Tomlinson. Tomlinson and his brother George bought the S Loomis shop in 1898 from Sherman Loomis’ heirs and operated it until 1920.
