Born near Boston, Robert Farrington Elwell became one of the better-known late 19th and early 20th Century illustrators, painters and sculptors of western subjects. While working as a reporter with the Boston Globe he became friends with Buffalo Bill Cody, maintaining a lifelong relationship with the legendary Wild West showman. Beginning in 1896, for over 25 years, he was Cody’s TE Ranch manager and increasingly managed Cody’s affairs. During this period he became a very prolific illustrator for national magazines continually reflecting his great regard for the culture and traditions of Indians and cowboys.
