Chief Red Cloud (Makhpiya-Luta) of the Oglala Sioux people, used his spearhead for the last time in the year 1862 in a battle against the Crow Indian tribe (held between Gillett and Sheridan, Wyoming, along the Powder River). Subsequently was invited by Andrew Jackson, to a parley, where he spoke of peace. It was up to the white man to keep peace, he said, that the Indians would not attack unless provoked. However, after frequent and persistent attacks by the white man, the Chief and his warriors kept the Bozeman trail impossible to travel on. After signing yet another peace treaty, Red Cloud was then forced not only to go live on a reservation, but also cut his hair as proof he would no longer lead the Sioux Indian people on the warpath against the white. "My sun is set. My day is done. I have been taught that I could gain the gods’ favors by being kind to my people and brave before my enemies; by telling the truth and living straight; by fighting for my people and their hunting grounds.”
