Ned Buntline

Author
1821-1886
BP: Harpersfield, NY

An author, who immortalized Western heroes such as Buffalo Bill and Zane Carrol Judson, was born in Harpersfield, New York, on March 20, 1821. At age 11, the adventurous youth ran away to sea on a man-of-war and began writing humorous sketches of navy life a few years later. Buntline is best known for his sensational stories of the West and his fateful 1860s meeting with Wm F Cody inspiring a best selling Buffalo Bill novel after which he hastily scribbled out a play, hiring Cody and Texas Jack Omhundro for the lead roles. The ad hoc collaboration was an instant hit and toured the Midwest bringing unprecedented fame to all principals involved in the production.
