Tom Browning

Artist
1949
BP: Ontario, OR
LKL: Bend, OR

Even as a young child Tom Browning knew that he wanted to be an artist. The idea was so natural that he “never considered doing anything else”. He took every art class offered at his high school, then majored in art at the University of Oregon. Following a trip to Montana while still a student, he saw the work of cowboy artist Charles Russell and knew the direction his work would take.

Within just a few years after graduation, he was painting full time and showing his work in galleries.

Browning has written an art instruction book and illustrated several others. In 1984, he and his wife Joyce established a publishing company specializing in prints and greeting cards. He no longer teaches workshops, writes or works on commercial ventures. Instead, painting in oils, he concentrates on what he loves most: understanding and capturing light. For him, “that’s what it’s all about.”
