After early training in his home country of Austria, Franz Arthur Bischoff arrived in New York in 1885 and found work as a highly gifted and skilled china decorator. It was not until the artist moved his family to California in 1906 that Bischoff became immersed in landscape painting and was immediately inspired to capture the distinct landscape surrounding Los Angeles. Bischoff would become one of the early residents of the area who fully adopted the tradition of Impressionism. Dr. Will South comments, "Bischoff's career in the context of California Impressionism is additionally interesting because--unlike his peers, who adopted Impressionist techniques from a combination of French and American sources--he seems to have learned the mode primarily from his fellow Californians. His color became flushed with pinks and reds, his compositions a maelstrom of bold, expressionistic strokes. He was an artist in whom the American ideology of truth to nature had not been culturally instilled, yet who was nonetheless attracted to the sensual qualities he observed in local painting."
